The following letter was sent from the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Church leaders in California to be read to all congregations on 29 June 2008:
Preserving Traditional Marriage and Strengthening Families
In March 2000 California voters overwhelmingly approved a state law providing that “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” The California Supreme Court recently reversed this vote of the people. On November 4, 2 008, Californians will vote on a proposed amendment to the California state constitution that will now restore the March 2000 definition of marriage approved by the voters.
The Church’s teachings and position on this moral issue are unequivocal. Marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God, and the formation of families is central to the Creator’s plan for His children. Children are entitled to be born within this bond of marriage.
A broad-based coalition of churches and other organizations placed the proposed amendment on the ballot. The Church will participate with this coalition in seeking its passage. Local Church leaders will provide information about how you may become involved in this important cause.
We ask that you do all you can to support the proposed constitutional amendment by donating of your means and time to assure that marriage in California is legally defined as being between a man and a woman. Our best efforts are required to preserve the sacred institution of marriage.
I just had to post a copy of this letter on my blog, as I become more and more disturbed by the amount of people who claim to believe in the same restored Gospel of Jesus Christ, yet feel to voice their opposition to this particular law in California that is to be voted on next week. I worry because I know that day will come when we will face the same issues here in the British Isles. I have no issue with same sex couples being entitled to the same tax or legal situations and wanting some kind of union, but just don't call it marriage, because it's not, and never will be!!!!! I can't help but think of Matthew 24:23 "even the very elect will be deceived." Satan is using rational arguments and making us feel as members of the Church that we are not being tolerant and respectful of others by standing up for marriage and it's scary to say he is succeeding. To me there is nothing to question. This does not mean I don't make my own decisions. What it means is I have a testimony of this Gospel, the Church, and I know that our Prophet leads and directs the Lord's work. I trust and want to be obedient to the Lord, therefore when he gives counsel through a living Prophet I don't have to question it every time, I already know what to do....follow that counsel. The First Presidency has spoken, they are the Lord's mouthpiece here on earth, it's a no brainer.....YES to prop if you live in California and can vote, and if you don't live there like myself, you still support it anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Couldn't agree more. It amazes me that members here are so negative toward it, and that if we disagree we are automatically labeled a homophobe - it drives me nuts. After the whole facebook "debate" yesterday, I am disgusted!!!
Thanks for posting this - it won't be long until this is a relevant issue everywhere.
Thanks for the post Karen. I agree with everything you said. This has been quite the hot issue in California! I can hardly wait for election day to be over. I just PRAY that people vote YES on 8!
